Hi everyone. I'm Shiva, a renowned motivational speaker and life coach from Chennai. Today I am going to share my thoughts on how to prevent depression by actually living, as opposed to just letting life happen to you as is its wont. Happiness is not a destination that you reach at the end of your days; it's something you have now and then as long as you're willing to work for it. So let me tell you what worked for me - 1) Exercise: Regular exercise is a time-tested method of alleviating depression and elevating mood. It releases endorphins, which are neurotransmitters that act as potent antidepressants. I am sure you have read this in a thousand self-help books before, but I'll tell you how to really do it. Walk every day - at least half an hour of brisk walking daily. Exercise vigorously. When your body is in motion, it produces feel-good hormones called endorphins that combat depression and anxiety and elevate mood. This is not just a theory but science backed by evidence - http://www.sciencedaily/releases/2012/12/121206175954. htm2) Sleep well: We are more prone to depression when we are tired. Sleep is crucial for mental health. When you're tired, the body releases stress hormones, which can trigger or worsen depression. So sleep well - at least 8 hours every day. Also - do not skimp on sleep during the weekend even if you have some important work on hand, because your mind still needs rest to recover from the days of work. Similarly, do not push yourself so hard during the week that you collapse at the weekend - take it easy instead. 3) Have a hobby or passion: This is a biggie. To live by the credo "I've got nothing to live for", is the surest recipe for depression. So do something that thrills you - it could be photography, writing, dancing - anything that excites you and nourishes your soul. I love meditation and spirituality, so I spend a lot of time on those activities. However, if people do not encourage you during your early years to develop a hobby or passion, you can choose one later in life as well - anything that gives your life meaning will do. Be it gardening or playing an instrument or art forms like painting, sculpture etc. The key is to make it something you are passionate about.4) The power of laughter: I love to laugh, so I do it often. If you want to be happy, find reasons to laugh every day - at yourself, at others - anybody or anything that makes you laugh will do the trick. The human body cannot differentiate between real and fake laughter, so even fake laughter works!Above all, take things in your stride. Don't get stressed out over small things. And try to have faith in yourself and your abilities - sometimes the biggest obstacle to happiness is our own pessimism! Then again - faith itself is a powerful antidepressant. cfa1e77820
