In 1926, the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA), a secret magic lobbying group in the United States, captures Newt Scamander , a Wizard who recently arrived in New York with a case full of magical creatures . Percival Graves , an American wizard and MACUSA's Director of Magical Security , interrogates Newt using Legilimency to discover his purpose for coming to New York . Graves threatens Newt that if he doesn't cooperate he will be imprisoned with his beasts. After complying to avoid scandal, Newt is released on bail as well as being put under the watchful eye of Tina Goldstein , an aspiring baker with a magic wand shop. They discover that a non-magical person named Porpentina "Tina" Goldstein accidentally let Newt's beasts loose after they escaped from his case during a chase with this magical creatures. Newt and Tina find Queenie and Jacob, two American wizards who were attacked by the rogue beasts . Graves arrives at the scene shortly after and uses a spell to contain all of them , except for Jacob's pet Niffler, which escapes . Graves then interrogates Tina and Queenie about the incident , explaining MACUSA's aim to keep secrecy and non-magical people away from magic. Graves drops hints that Credence, one of Tina's coworkers at her bakery, is in fact a powerful Obscurial . In the following months, Niffler manages to steal a number of MACUSA's most prized items , killing a number of No-Maj inspectors in the process. Meanwhile, Newt and Tina volunteer at a local orphanage . At New York City Zoo , Graves identifies a giant hairy nocturnal beast as a Goliath, one of the most dangerous magical creatures living in the city . While resting at Tina's flat, Newt discovers that his case is missing, having been stolen by Rolf Scamander , Grindelwald's son.
